Section 1. Previous characterization:
There is no Sherlock Holmes story without Dr. Watson who is almost as famous as the titular detective himself, and has appeared in pretty much every piece of Sherlock Holmes media that exists. When first making the design i asked who is Watson in story, what does he do, how he interacts with other characters and what would his world view be like.
Watson in the earliest versions was an essential part of the story not only due to him being another person that Holmes can bounce off of but also an in universe reason for the audience to get en explanation of how Holmes was able to spot connections between seemingly ordinary and unrelated things.
I arrived at the conclusion that most of the time Watson's relationship and effect on other characters is more important than he himself (even though he does have very interesting elements).
And as long as he fulfills these criteria Watson can pretty much look, act, and be presented as almost any type of character.

Section 2. The Design process:
I personally like the old version of Watson that even if you are not interested in the backstory they still serve the plot well and make things work.

I think the original depiction serves this role well and would already be a very good contrast to my Sherlock design and so i decided to not change it much. Due to already knowing exactly how i wanted the character to look and what kind of air i wanted him to have my first attempt was also my last as i was satisfied with the results after the first try.

His clothes are largely the same so what i wanted to focus on is the details i added in. He is checking the time on his pocket watch which implies a vary orderly and punctual personality. He is holding a medical bag (which i admit didn't quite look like this in reality, but its not enough of a flaw for me to redraw it). And he has a scar on his face hinting at his backstory and how he ties into the main plot.
With all the other recognizable things still being there.
Section 3. My Version:
My version of Watson is pretty similar to the original as i did not see that much reason in changing him much. As his original version would fit largely well with the type of character that i wanted him to be. I more so just focused on his orderliness and his adherence to his duty as both a doctor and a friend to Sherlock. I also chose to imply a more interesting backstory with that scar on his face.
